- Structure
- A lactam bridge between aspartate and lysine closes the ring, constraining the His-Phe-Arg-Trp core that all melanocortin peptides share. The D-phenylalanine and norleucine substitutions make it more stable than native α-MSH.
- Pharmacology
- Developed at the University of Arizona in the early 1990s, Melanotan II is a non-selective agonist at the MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5 melanocortin receptors and is used in research on melanocortin receptor pharmacology.
